What is MMA?
MMA or Mixed Martial Arts is a modern style of fighting that evolved from the no holds barred fighting competition of the early 90's
The Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC. In the beggining the UFC was a full contact martial arts tournment designed to bring
together fighters from all around the world and from all different styles to compete for the title of The Ultimate Fighting Champion.
This was amazing to watch as you had Karate vs Judo , Savate vs Sumo, Kung Fu vs Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and so on. The outcome from
the very first UFC was the world being exposed to one of the more modern and influential styles of martial art Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
It wasn't long before the fighters of the UFC realized that if they only studied a striking art then 9 out of 10 times they were going to be
taken down and either choked out or locked up for a submission. The reverse also became evident, the puerly grappling guys started to see
the value in learning to strike and so the MMA evolution began.
MMA training uses techniques from Muay Thai, Judo, Jujitsu, Wrestling, Boxing and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu all blended into one seamless
fighting art. MMA is predominantly a fighting sport but is also an excellent way to train for fitness and fun.
At The Defensive Arts Academy MMA is taught in a safe, fun and relaxed environment and is for men and women.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu jitsu is an exciting grappling art that is prodomanently a ground fighting system. Bjj incorporates the useage
of pinning positions to secure and gain control over an opponent and utilises superior leverage to apply joint locks such as
armbars, (hyper extension of the elbow) shoulder locks, leg locks, chokes and much, much more.
Competitions in Brazilian Jiu jitsu are very common and are great fun and serve as an excellent opportunity to test your
skills and help develope a strong understanding of how the techniques work.

Fitness Kickboxing
Fitness Kickboxing is a great way to increase your fitness, flexability and strength all in one class. Our Fitness
Kickboxing class is fun, action packed and cunducted in a relaxed and friendly manner by our female coach Belinda.
This class incorporates pad work with one person holding focus mitts, thai pads or kick shields while the other person
works out using punches, kicks, kness, elbows, push ups, sit ups and much more.
Belinda will teach you correct technique and give you a great workout!
